Aerie Model Iskra Lawrence has been a champion at promoting body positivity, especially within the modeling industry, and her latest Instagram post might be her most powerful message yet. The 25-year-old used the photo-sharing site to show how misleading pictures can be. She uploaded two photos of herself wearing a bikini. At a first glance, they almost look identical, but after taking a closer look you’ll notice tiny differences between the two. The one on the left is the original, and the image on the right has been retouched. Lawrence was brave to post the honest photos, and she explained why she did it in the caption.
“Shocking it only took me about 10 minutes to Photoshop myself to ‘perfection,’” Lawrence writes. “But WTF is perfect? We weren’t born thinking flaws made you less beautiful. We are taught by society and the media that we should feel insecure about our flaws so we buy into certain products etc to “improve” or attain perfection.”
Lawrence goes on to explain that she posted both pictures side by side so that her followers could see how much of an impact a few swipes on her phone could make. “I can’t leave home everyday retouched and live in the ‘real world’ airbrushed, so why would I want to pretend to be online?” Lawrence says. “We are beautiful because we are us, and we are so much more than our appearance.”
Lawrence’s encouraging words were uplifting to so many, bringing in thousands of likes and comments. And the best part of her message was the uplifting call to action at the end. “I hope when you see what looks like perfect flawless images of people online you don’t not ever feel insecure or less beautiful because it’s not real,” says Lawrence before summing up her message. “What’s real is you and you are good enough ‘cus those ‘flaws’ make you completely unique.”
