Sure, it’s impressive that Michael Phelps has 23 Olympic medals, 19 of which are gold medals. And, sure, he’s one of the greatest swimmers in the world and the most decorated Olympian ever. But the Internet is truly in awe of Phelps for another reason: His angry face before swimming in the 200m butterfly semifinal last night in Rio. Before Phelps raced, NBC cut to a shot of the swimmers in the “ready room,” which is the holding space for competitors before their events. Phelps was joined in the room by his South African competitor Chad le Clos, and he was not pleased with le Clos’ pre-race antics. The South African jumped around the room, shadowboxing and pumping himself up for the event. Meanwhile, Phelps sat with his hood up and headphones on, staring daggers at le Clos like we’ve never seen before.

Instantly, the footage of Phelps shooting lasers from his eyes at le Clos went viral. Comparisons to Star Wars villains came quickly, as did other hilarious memes and comments.

Why the beef between the two swimmers? le Clos beat Phelps in the 200m butterfly at the London 2012 games by just 0.05 seconds. It was Phelps’ first international loss in the 200m butterfly in a decade, according to SB Nation. le Clos and Phelps became friends after Phelps “retired,” and even planned a shark diving adventure together in 2013, as Olympic BFFs do. But then, when Phelps returned to swimming, their rivalry started up again.

Phelps beat le Clos in the 200m butterfly semifinal last night, coming in second with a time of 1:54.12 with le Clos in third at 1:55.19. Phelps told NBC that in the ready room before the race, he really wasn’t paying attention to le Clos. “I was trying not to even really look at him,” he said.
